How to Ask for Feedback After an Interview

How to Ask for Feedback After an Interview

I was asked by a participant in one of the webinars I have been running "What can I ask for feedback on my interview, other than the standard strengths and weaknesses?"

So my suggestions are questions like:

  • What did the successful applicant bring to the table that I didn't?

  • What made you decide they were a better fit for the role?

  • Is there another area or role in the organisation that you think my skills may apply?

  • What is the best way for me to look at future positions that may become available now that I have been interviewed?

  • If I applied again what could I do differently to be the successful applicant?

  • In order to help me improve, if you had to choose one of two areas for me to focus my energy what would they be?

  • Were there any particular skills you were looking for that I didn't have?

  • Did my referees supply you with the correct or enough specific information?

  • Should I keep in touch in case this person doesn't pass their probation period?

So choose what is most appropriate for the situation and the role and be specific with your questions to get good feedback. Make sure your tone is one of curiosity rather than one that will make them defensive and feel like they need to justify their decision.
