How Elite Swim Coach, Joanne Love Reinvigorated Our Goal Setting Techniques

For over 30 years Joanne Love’s coaching methods have influenced Australia’s leading athletes, coaches, and teams. And now she has reinvigorated our own team's goal setting techniques.

Meet Joanne Love, Elite Swimming Coach and Goal Setting Heroine

Every quarter each member in our community reviews their goals and aspirations for the coming week, month and year. We did it the same way every year until I met Joanne almost five years ago.

You see, Joanne Love has been an elite swimming coach for many years, and has been included on many state, national and international teams. Joanne represented Australia at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics as a swimming coach and has also coached a number of Olympic medallists and world record holders. She holds a degree in psychology and currently works with elite sporting organisations imparting a wealth of information on how psychology and neuroscience can create successful outcomes.

She has been featured in and contributed to numerous publications, incorporating both psychology, leadership and coaching, while also being featured as a regular guest speaker at conferences across the world, schools and sporting organisations. And Joanne also acts as a mentor to other elite sporting coaches, working with them to incorporate psychological skills in their training programs.

After working with elite athletes who struggle with mental health issues 20 years down the track, Joanne has identified the specific mental health issues that come with a lack of effective goal setting.

Effective Goal Setting Techniques

Joanne talks about some key areas in her work:

  • The impact of setting goals we don’t have control over

  • The perfect combination of goals to set each day, week, month and year to move you towards success

  • Pressure and what holds us back from performing at our best

Her work inspired the redesign of the goal-setting techniques and processes for the Women with Influence Community, taking us to a more evidence-based approach. She also consulted on the design of our popular Personal Power Planner.

'I love to see everyone perform at their best. Unfortunately, many people are held back by leaders who don’t know how to inspire the people they lead. Today’s young people aren’t lazy! They just need to be engaged.'

Joanne has written four books and been featured in the media. She rolled out her goal-setting techniques and programs in organisations and schools across Australia. Even better, I was recently able to interview her on the podcast, take a listen!

As an industry expert and leader in her field, Joanne is part of our Women with Influence Community. Maybe you can see yourself being part of this community too!?
